Thesis Dance Celebrates the Art of Battling
Thesis Dance is the largest community dance festival in Florida. On day 2 of their three-day festival, we introduced Locals I Know to the Thesis Dance community. It was an incredible day celebrating the art of battling. Locals I Know member Hans Pierre hosted the event, with DJ Java J and DJ Mahay spinning the tunes.
The music in this recap is from the classic battle track "Dueling Banjos," made famous in the 1972 film "Deliverance." This bluegrass composition by Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith reached No. 5 on the Hot Country Singles chart in 1973. This track perfectly captures the joy of competitive dance we witnessed on Saturday.
The video recap is inspired by the off-center blending of music genres by DJs like Kool Herc, Grand Master Flash, and our favorite genre buster, Afrika Bambaataa. These forefathers of hip-hop produced some of the greatest battle tracks by drawing influence outside the "Black Music" genre.
